MONESSEN — Mayor Shorraw issued a proclamation on Sunday, declaring this week (April 19 through April 25) ‘Love Your Library Week’, as part of National Library Week. The Pennsylvania Library Association and the American Library Association are encouraging that communities celebrate their libraries, despite the closures due to COVID19.

In Mayor Shorraw’s proclamation, he encourages residents, not just in Monessen, but in the whole area to showcase their libraries, by using the hashtags. #LoveYourLibrary and #ThankYouLibraries. Participants can share a photo or memory on social media, involving their library, including the Monessen Public Library. They can also share what they are currently reading, their favorite book, or why they think libraries are an important part of our communities.

Monessen Library is an anchor institution in Monessen. For over 80 years, the Monessen Public Library has served the residents of Monessen and visitors from the surrounding four counties. The Monessen Library has grown over the years, and was recently renovated in 2012. It has moved with the times too. Today, the Monessen Library offers a robust children’s program, computer access, community meeting space, STEM and STEAM learning, a Genealogy Club, Microfilm and Newspaper Archives, and of course — books! The library has events all year round, they are also the host of the Mon Valley Art Club’s annual art showing, and the Friends of the Monessen Library host their annual Monessen Library Luncheon every fall. On average, there are over 1,000 visitors at the Monessen Library each month.

Mayor Shorraw says, “Our library is one of our most valued institutions in Monessen. It provides an anchor for our Downtown. It is a place where kids can go to learn and succeed, and where friends can catch up. The staff is friendly and helpful, and we are truly lucky to have such a wonderful library!”

The Monessen Library remains closed temporarily, due to COVID19, but Mayor Shorraw and the Monessen Library Board hopes that this social media campaign will bring a smile to everyone’s face; and will show people how important libraries are to so many of us. The Monessen Public Library can be found on the web and on Facebook.
